Spotlight on The Nameless Mod
The Nameless Mod

There are many mods in the community based upon the original game. Some play the role of a sequel. Some play the role of a prequel. Some use the twist of an alternate storyline. A few mods have even moved away from the original storyline to create new worlds of adventure and intrigue. Then there is TNM - The Nameless Mod.

TNM is heavily based on the Deus Ex community. You play the role of project leader, Trestkon, who is charged with the task of finding a missing forum moderator - Deus Diablo. The story begins with Trestkon searching for information at Sol's Bar and Grille, one of many new locations created for the project. Many of the characters in TNM are based upon forums regulars and community leaders, and there are factions based upon community resources such as PDX and DXO.

The project started out as a test map that Trestkon planned to make to test out his mapping skills. Just for fun he decided he would use the names of forum regulars as the names of NPCs in his map. Many people showed a good deal of interest in the project and since then it has grown from a simple test map to a full scale modification. To add even more community involvement, TNM is holding a short story contest with the winner having his or her story added to TNM in the form of a book within the game.

Trestkon says that there will be four factions, Any of which you may choose to join. Your selection will influence your character's decisions and the way the story unfolds. As an example, if you choose an honorable faction you may have the option to exchange credits for a key item, wheras joining a violent, greedy faction would give you the option to kill the person holding the item you need rather than paying them for it.

While TNM will - for the most part - play like the original game, there will be a number of custom weapons and hidden "easter eggs" throughout TNM's worlds. Other features include new player models and skins, voice acting and custom music, including the new TNM theme song (download the official TNM theme music here). The story attempts to implement a good deal of humor while still offereing a challenging and interesting storyline.

While TNM is relatively young compared to many of the modifications in the community such as Redsun 2020 or Hotel Carone (see July's mod spotlight for Hotel Carone), TNM has a large following, a substantial production team (16 members) and most importantly, the project is steadily progressing. The official TNM site's progress meter shows that the project is approximately half complete, and according to Trestkon, TNM is not far from a beta test release.
