Of FMs, (SinglePlayer) Mods and the Loading thereof
by Despot
Right, so you've been to our FMs section and downloaded that sweet custom Deus Ex Experience(tim). Now, how to get it loaded? Never fear, the sole purpose of our existence is to aid your quest!
Preparatory Stages
To begin with, back up your critical files. You may need to remove the FM one day, and not many are un-install friendly at this point. Copy "DeusEx.ini" and "User.ini" to a backup directory or save them under different filenames. In addition, it would be well to backup any other files the mission/mod overwrites.
Next prep stage is to open up the zip file (if you need a utility to view this type of file, look no further than Winzip). Then, with utmost care, READ THE README. Make note of any special instructions included there-in. If there is no readme, hastily delete the file and send a nasty e-mail to the Author.
Shuffle the Files
Next, extract the contents of the archive (carefully now, careful!) to your Deus Ex directory. The author may have preserved the directory structure in the zip file, and if this is so, you can simple extract to the root Deus Ex directory, and all the files will be placed in the correct locations. If not, consult the readme file. If the readme file doesn't specify, here are the default locations (asterisk is a wildcard character indicating any character or series of characters, and [Deus Ex Directory] indicates the root installation directory of Deus Ex, normally "C:\DeusEx\"):
*.dx goes in [Deus Ex Directory]\Maps
*.utx in [Deus Ex Directory]\Textures
*.umx in [Deus Ex Directory]\Music
*.u in [Deus Ex Directory]\System
All other files are either extraneous, or require special attention, which should be explained in the readme.
Lock and Load
So now you've got your files deployed, you have a couple options: you can load the game manually, or use an automagic loader.
