John didn't go into work the next day, calling in sick. He
was sick - sick with worry about Steve, worry about the United Nations
and the Coalition, but mostly about his daughter who, according to Steve, was
still alive. Probably imprisoned somewhere. He checked his email
again, for a diversion from the insatiable worry. He had new mail, from
UNATCO HQ. His heart beat fast. His breaths came quicker. With
a trembling hand he opened the email.
"The UNATCO Headquarters Command Board has unanimously
decided to transfer one Jonathan T. Murphy, Special Agent First Class, to resume
active duty at the UNATCO Liberty Island Headquarters for special training and
operations. A promotion in rank will accompany this transfer and
the successful culmination of said assignment. Special Agent Murphy will
have exactly ninety-six (96) hours, or four (4) days after receipt of this
message, to report for duty to Director Joseph Manderley at Liberty Island.
UNATCO HQ Command"
They knew. They had to know. The brute who had taken
Steve Hawke away must have been visually augmented to show data readouts of the
people he saw, so now the HQ knew he'd been with Steve when he was captured.
He hated them for that, hated them with a burning passion
hungrily consuming all his other emotions. He would go to Liberty Island,
even if they were bribing him to keep his mouth shut. Regardless of that,
now he knew the truth. He knew the truth, but... he had to know more.
He packed his few personal items and headed out the door.
His hand was clenched, his nails digging into his palm.
