Edge of Dark has been hosted on PlanetDeusEx for quite some time, and I remember being pretty excited when they came to us. Mostly because I really wanted to host them when they first announced the project, but they said no :) So imagine how cool it was for me to finally get to check out some of their levels firsthand! Take a read at what the mod is all about, and then see what I thought of the maps I checked out. Then to top all this off, read the interview!
Description
The simplest description of Edge of Dark would be that it's a singleplayer modification for Deus Ex. You are a normal person caught between warring groups, the Illuminati and the Shade Republic, and something called Emotion Cloning is turning friends into enemies. Shade01 from the development team sent along some more detailed info...
A bit of info about the level and the game: The level you are walking around in is known as the Anisuum District. There are 5 more districts in the city, totaling 10 non linear playable areas. Each area is connected by subway and taxi. Some of our districts are three times larger than this one. Each
district has a distinct architectural style and texture set, so there will be no other zones that look like the one you are in. Some of the other zones include a business and commerce district, where the player can open a bank account and play the stock market if they choose, and a district devoted to the city nightlife. There will be fast food joints and storage service centers dispersed throughout the districts.
The player will fatigue as they walk around town and will need to eat from time to time to regain energy (a meter seperate from health. The player can have 100% health and be tired at the same time). In the city, you don't find medkits, ammo and things just laying around. Everything has to be bought and sold. The storage centers come in when you run out of inventory space. For a fee, you can open an account at a storage center and store your extra items there.
We also have a completely new hacking system that is radically different and WAY more interactive than the one in Deus Ex. As part of this system, we have a completely new augmentation subclass entirely for hacking, and various types of equipement sold throughout the city devoted to hacking. These are just some of the new features being put into the game.
Impressions
I got to check out four levels from the Anisuum District of Edge of Dark. They're all still pre-alpha and therefore unpopulated, but there has certainly been a lot of work done already. Geometry abounds, and I spent ten minutes just exploring the city map! The Edge of Dark mapper (in this case, Chlestron is the designer behind what I got to see) certainly has a handle on putting together realistic game spaces with added architectural details, and even a bit of that UT-engine magic.
In the final version of the Anisuum district you will find a restaurant, a police station, a theater, a hotel, a bank, and a nightclub, among other things.
